Twitter has chosen April Fool’s Day, alternatively known as April 1, to immediately remove legacy blue checkmarks from the platform. Regardless of the significance of the day Twitter chose, the exclusion of legacy checkmarks has been expected for months now. Musk tweeted in December that the checks would be removed "in a few months" because "the manner in which they were distributed was corrupt and nonsensical."
Since then, when legacy blue checkmark holders click on their checkmark, they receive a pop-up that says, "This is a legacy verified account. It may or may not be notable.”
Before Musk acquired the company, Twitter used checkmarks to verify individuals and entities as active, authentic, and notable accounts of interest. Free verified checkmarks were distributed.

Today, Twitter users may purchase a blue check through the Twitter Blue subscription system for $8 per month (iOS and Android signups will cost $11 per month, due to app store expenses). There are also other checkmark colors and badges available for purchase to denote whether an account is a business or a government, for example.
Twitter claims the purchase of a checkmark offers users access to subscriber-only features including fewer advertisements on their timeline, preferred ranking in discussions, bookmark folders, and the ability to create lengthy tweets, modify tweets and undo tweets.
The news comes within hours of Twitter also announcing the availability of the Blue subscription globally.
