Meta, Facebook’s parent company, is looking to build a new platform for sharing text updates, as confirmed by the company to CNN on Friday, marking it as the “most high-profile new contender” to face Twitter head-on as it crumbles under Elon Musk’s ministrations.

“We believe there’s an opportunity for a separate space where creators and public figures can share timely updates about their interests,” a Meta spokesperson said in a statement to CNN.

Plans suggest that the platform would be decentralized, which means users could create different servers or communities with their own rules, instead of one central platform in control of Meta. Although the concept is similar to Discord or Reddit, it is highly different from Meta’s usual platforms.

Meta’s new platform being decentralized could allow third parties to build apps and other features in the platform, providing all users with a unique experience that will be entirely different from what Meta might build.

Codenamed P92, the platform is still in its early stages and being led by the head of  Instagram, Adam Mosseri, states Platformer.

Meta declined to comment beyond its initial statement, which includes responses to questions about the platform’s launch date and features.

Multiple upstart platforms have attempted to steal the crown from Twitter in recent months, following Musk’s takeover of Twitter, and the eventual downfall.

Meta, being a well-known company, could benefit from its other existing platforms, such as Facebook. These new plans for a new platform are also backed by Meta’s new strategy of emphasizing video and recommended content to compete with other social media platforms. Facebook head, Tom Alison told CNN that “the app is testing reincorporating messaging so that users don’t have to go to a separate app to share content they find on Facebook.”
