Ukraine claims that Russia made more than 50 missile launches toward key infrastructure in the country, including the capital Kyiv, resulting in a blackout. Additionally, there were reportedly two explosions in Kyiv. A local informed the BBC that his neighborhood lacked electricity. Also, energy plants were affected in Kharkiv, a city in the northeast.

Russia strikes Ukraine, leading to a massive blackout

The latest strikes came after Russia accused Ukraine of carrying out a drone attack on its Black Sea Fleet in the annexed Crimea. Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko stated that the missile strike left 80% of city residents without a water supply after it damaged an energy facility near the capital and engineers were quickly dispatched to repair the supply. The city authorities said that "no hits were recorded" in Kyiv itself due to "the effective work of the air defense forces." Additionally, reports of missile strikes on Monday morning came from Lviv in western Ukraine, Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhzhia in the southeast, and the central Vinnytsia region. There are also reports of damage to a facility at the Dnipro hydroelectric power plant in the Zaporizhzhia region. If there were any casualties, it was not immediately known. Fearing additional strikes, locals in the targeted areas were asked to remain in shelters. Additionally, they were informed that "emergency power outages" were being implemented nationwide. According to Yuriy Ihnat, a spokesman for the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia utilized its strategic bombers to execute their "massive" strikes.

More Details

Following the launch of more than 50 cruise missiles on Monday morning, the Ukrainian military later reported that 44 of them had been destroyed. Dmytro Kuleba, the foreign minister of Ukraine, claimed that "Russia fights civilians rather than fighting on the battlefield." Ukraine blackout Before the chilly winter months, Russia reportedly destroyed about a third of Ukraine's power plants and other energy-generating facilities in a series of lethal missile and drone operations in recent weeks. Targeting civilian infrastructure, according to Ukraine and its Western backers, constitutes war crimes.

Bottom line

As of yet, Russia has not responded publicly to the alleged most recent strikes. According to the Russian defense ministry, a drone attack on a Russian warship on Saturday in the port city of Sevastopol resulted in damage. Additionally, it claimed that British experts trained the Ukrainian forces who later participated in the strikes in Crimea, the southernmost peninsula of Ukraine that Russia invaded in 2014. Ukraine blackout However, Moscow made no statements that were supported by any evidence. On the other hand, Ukraine has not commented on the issue, while the UK defense ministry said Russia was "peddling false claims on an epic scale.”
