US denies Ukraine's request for 100 A-10 Warthogs in its conflict with Russia

According to a report, Oleksii Reznikov, the defense minister for Ukraine, requested 100 of the US's A-10 Warthog ground attack aircraft a few weeks after the Russian incursion in February. However, in order to stop the escalation of hostilities between Moscow and Washington, the US had to turn down this proposal. The ten-month crisis in Ukraine has the US and its NATO allies helping the Ukrainian defense. Military help supplied by the US government includes the most advanced air defense system, drones, and other weapons. However, the US has not deployed fighter aircraft. However, the data suggests that Ukraine did its homework before making the request. The Ukrainian defense minister, Aleksii Reznikov, asserted that he based his estimate of the US Air Force's availability of 100 aircraft on data that was easily accessible to the general public. Kyiv might use a 40-mile (64-km) column of tanks and heavily armored vehicles to stop a Russian attack, he said, adding that planes could be dispatched to back the Ukrainian military operation. The A-10 Thunderbolt II, built by Fairchild Republic Company, a unit of Northrop Grumman, was the first aircraft designed for close air support of ground forces. The Night Vision Imaging Devices (NVIS), helmet-mounted cueing systems, and a large bubble canopy cockpit with a broad field of view are all features of the A-10 Thunderbolt IIs, also known as the Warthog. The aircraft has self-healing fuel cells, is more resistant to projectile damage, and has a manual systems backup in case the hydraulic flight control system fails. This makes it more durable than any other combat aircraft in history. The single-pilot aircraft can carry up to 16,000 pounds (7,200 kg) of combined ordnance, which includes missiles, rockets, and bombs, under its wing and fuselage pylons. In light of the ongoing conflict with Ukraine, US officials claim that a Russian military company received weapons from North Korea.

Reasons the US Turned Down Ukraine's Request

Reznikov told the Washington Post that US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin firmly rejected the Ukrainian request because the A-10s would have been an easy target for Russian air defense systems without the necessary help. Because it believes that they could be used to conduct deep attacks inside of Russia, raising tensions with Moscow, the US has refrained from providing aircraft as part of its assistance to Ukraine. With intentions to provide other similar strike options, the US has taken the initiative to Ukrainian arm jets with AGM-88 High-speed Anti-Radiation Missiles (HARM). Additionally, President Joe Biden stated last week that following President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's visit to the White House, Ukraine will receive the Patriot missile battery system.
