Microsoft is launching a new feature to enhance spreadsheet speed.
Excel spreadsheets may have plenty of cells to store data, which slows the system even though they do not contain visible data. Microsoft stated in its blog post that the empty cells with leftover formatting and style info could slow the system and increase the size of the file.
They quoted, “we observed that over time, a workbook can collect cells that have no data but still contain confidential information of little or no use. For example, these cells may have had data and formatting to start with; however, now they do not have any data, but still take up space because they contain formatting.”
The Check Performance feature is the first attempt by the company to fix the flaw, which can be approached from the Review tab in Excel online. It looks for empty cells containing formatting data like text alignment or fills color with a button to erase the data.
The company used an example of a spreadsheet containing millions of empty cells with the file reduced from 3.14 MB to 17.5 KB. The feature does not run independently, so you are saved from the tension of formatting getting lost that you will be using later on.
Excel Online accesses the new feature with paid Microsoft 365 patrons. The company stated that they have upcoming plans to launch the feature in Excel and Mac. They are also checking for problems that could add to the detection of Check Performance.
