Sam Westmoreland, a Mississippi State freshman offensive lineman, was discovered dead at a church on Wednesday, according to authorities, who spoke to TMZ.
According to a representative for the Oktibbeha County Sheriff's Office, deputies were summoned to the Blackjack Missionary Baptist Church in Starkville to conduct a death investigation when they arrived they found Westmoreland's corpse.

Police canvased the scene and cleared it several hours later. The spokesperson said authorities still had “no reason to suspect foul play” at this point, but the probe is ongoing.
The cause of Westmoreland's demise is still a mystery.
According to Mississippi State, the inquiry is being conducted in collaboration with university departments, the Oktibbeha County Sheriff's Office, and the Oktibbeha County Coroner's Office.
Westmoreland, a resident of Tupelo, Mississippi, was discovered dead two days before turning 19. The Bulldogs' 6-foot-4 offensive tackle, who was studying in industrial technology, was a freshman this season.

“The Mississippi State Athletics Family is heartbroken by the sudden death of Sam Westmoreland,” head football coach Mike Leach said in a statement. “Sam was a beloved son, brother and teammate, and a tremendous young man with a limitless future. He will always be remembered and deeply missed by everyone who knew and loved him.
“The entire MSU Family mourns as our thoughts and prayers go out to the Westmoreland family. Our highest priority is the support of the Westmoreland family and our student-athletes during this troubling time.”

In a separate statement, Mississippi State athletics director John Cohen said, “We are heartbroken by the sudden loss of Sam Westmoreland. Mississippi State is a family, and we are all mourning during this trying time. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Westmoreland family and everyone who knew and loved Sam.”
