Why are commercial trucks equipped with convex & concave wheels?

Wonder why tractor-trailer and work truck wheels were so bulbous and sunken. As previously discussed, there are reasons why trucks are the way they are. It's all about packaging, saving money, and old-school common sense. Today, we'll look at the wheel problem. Many commercial trucks' front wheels are typically bowed out, with a bulge over the hub. This is done to allow for the steering joints, bushings, and bearings, as well as the suspension and braking systems while keeping the axle as wide as possible for good stability. It also means that the center of the axis around which the wheels turn is as aligned with the center of the wheel and tire as it possibly can be, which improves dynamics and load-bearing capability. The topmost wheel on the back of a dually — a truck with two rear wheels on each side — is the same as the outermost wheel on the front. That wheel is bolted to the face of the innermost rear wheel, which is geared similarly to the front axle. Things start to get interesting when we look around the back. And if a tire fails and needs to be replaced, all of the wheels will be the same. There's no need to fiddle with separate front and rear wheels. How's that for usefulness? That's all. One of those simple solutions to a simple question that takes your breath away with its brilliance. Trucks are a never-ending source of satisfying engineering problem-solving.
