You Can Send Messages to Europa, Jupiter's Moon, Using NASA's "Message in a Bottle"

(Image credit- Gulf News) The public is now being given the chance to have their names added to a poem written in honor of the future Europa Clipper mission by NASA. This enormous mission, which is scheduled to take out in October 2024, will examine Jupiter's moon Europa and look into the possibility that its icy crust conceals a large ocean with the potential to harbor life. Famous U.S. Poet Laureate Ada Limón wrote the poem, "In Praise of Mystery: A Poem for Europa," which will be etched onto a microchip along with the names of participants.

How to Take Part in the Campaign

The "Message in a Bottle" campaign's website is where interested people can submit their names before December 31 to take part in this unique project. There, readers can read the poem, watch an animated video of Limón reading it, and even download a customized image of themselves holding a message in a bottle with Europa and Jupiter in the background. Participants can use the official hashtag #SendYourName to express their joy on social media. Message in a Bottle is the ideal fusion of science, art, and technology, and we are excited to share with the world the opportunity to be a part of Europa Clipper's journey, said Nicola Fox, associate administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in a press release. Fox continued, "I absolutely adore the idea that our names will be moving throughout our solar system onboard the radiation-tolerant spacecraft that aims to discover the mysteries of Jupiter's icy moon. The "Message in a Bottle" effort is a continuation of earlier NASA programs that let millions of people transmit their names on missions like Artemis I and different Mars spacecraft. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) director, Laurie Leshin, emphasized the significance of inspiration in guiding humanity's quest for knowledge and adventure. "Humanity is driven to ask the big questions, to which this mission will contribute," she said. Each and every name that will be traveling to Europa is carrying inspiration. The Upcoming NASA Mission to Jupiter

The Europa Clipper spacecraft, which is currently being built at JPL, will launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida, and travel 1.8 billion miles (2.6 billion kilometers) to the Jupiter system, where it is expected to land in 2030. The spacecraft will cover an extra half-billion miles throughout its orbit of Jupiter and around 50 flybys of Europa. It will collect information about Europa's deep ocean, frozen crust, and atmosphere using a variety of scientific instruments. Ada Limón, the Poet Laureate, got the chance to go to JPL in January to see how the spacecraft was put together and to learn more about the mission. Exploring Europa's deep interior is the goal of the Europa Clipper project, which is run by Caltech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in collaboration with the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory.
