St. Louis

According to a recent survey, St. Louis is the most dangerous city in the US due to its high crime rate as well as threats like natural catastrophes and traffic accidents. Additionally, due to a high prevalence of assault and other problems, St. Louis came in dead last in a WalletHub research evaluating the safety of 182 US cities.

Furthermore, over the past few years, the city has endured different upheavals, including devastation like flash floods, a possible serial killer, and decades of upsetting allegations of police abuse.

How WalletHub conduct the survey?

WalletHub compared the US cities across home and community safety, disaster risk, and financial safety measures. Additionally, the three measures consisted of a total of 42 subcategories, including hate crimes, unemployment, risk of natural disasters, and even vaccination rates.

Moreover, to compare the 182 cities across the 42 subcategories, WalletHub assigned a score of 100 to each metric. Additionally, cities with high ratings in the category had high levels of safety.

“We then determined each city’s weighted average across all metrics to calculate its overall score and used the resulting scores to rank-order our sample. In determining our sample, we considered only the city proper in each case, excluding cities in the surrounding metro area,” the study revealed.

The result of the study

St. Louis received the lowest score of 42.8 out of 100, but it was only marginally worse off than Fort Lauderdale, Florida (48.8) and San Bernardino, California (54.4). In addition, in 2020, Fort Lauderdale ranked as the most dangerous city.

On the other hand, New York City, which has recently eclipsed the greatest rate of subway homicides in the past 25 years and frequently draws headlines for increased crime, performed better than 55 other cities.

According to WalletHub, Columbia, Maryland has the safest neighborhoods and the fewest traffic deaths – scoring 85.99 out of 100.

Lastly, Nashua, New Hampshire; Laredo, Texas; Portland, Maine, and Warwick, Rhode Island made up the top five safest cities.
