Apparently, Elon Musk is launching a generative artificial intelligence project at Twitter

Given the attention that is now being given to generative AI tools like Google's Bard chatbots and OpenAI's ChatGPT, it should come as no surprise that Elon Musk, a man who seems to adore technology and attention in equal measure, wants a piece of the action. Now, Musk is reportedly planning to jump into AI. Some have speculated that he may have signed the letter in an effort to halt progress so he could more easily play catch-up due to his apparent intention to establish his own AI project. According to two people with knowledge of the situation, Musk, who paid $44 billion to acquire Twitter in October, has already spent approximately $10,000 on 10,000 graphics processing units (GPUs) to support the rumored initiative. The project is reportedly still in its early stages, but according to a source familiar with Musk's strategy, his decision to invest in a large number of GPUs shows he is committed to seeing it through. Musk is not a newcomer to AI, of course. He did, after all, co-found OpenAI, the organization that created ChatGPT, in 2015, only to leave it two years later. It's unclear what Musk's present AI goals are. The billionaire entrepreneur might want to use the technology for something as straightforward as enhancing Twitter's search function, but given his ambition and competitive nature, it's also possible that he has his sights set on something more along the lines of ChatGPT, OpenAI's highly praised generative-AI chatbot that can converse in a human-like manner and even write code. Musk may be expecting that AI would fill the remaining positions as he has already let go of more than half of Twitter's staff as a result of cost-cutting efforts.
