Samsung’s solid-state battery development team stated in a recent presentation that the identical electric vehicle will weigh less with a solid-state battery and be exempt from mechanical parking restrictions. Despite the fact that weight and safety are the two main benefits, production costs are currently a top priority.
Samsung SDI discussed its work on a solid-state battery using the patented Super-Gap Edge technology as part of presentations it gave earlier this month at the InterBattery 2023 expo. In the second half of the year, Samsung’s team will be running a pilot “S line” for the anode-less cells to verify the viability of their solid-state battery concept for mass production. To avoid the thermal runaway mechanism that leads to electric car fires, Samsung’s all-solid cells use stable oxide electrolyte rather than the flammable lithium hexafluorophosphate electrolyte solution in current batteries. Samsung is relying on its extensive knowledge of creating solid oxide at high temperatures as the electrolyte for its multi-layer ceramic capacitors (MLCC).
Samsung’s solid-state battery presentation concentrated on the weight reduction in addition to safety and volumetric density, which can deliver 1.5–2x greater performance in the same footprint as existing cells. Using solid-state technology can greatly reduce the additional weight of the battery, which can make an electric car’s weight equal to that of an SUV with a gas engine. This will extend the range between charges.

High pressure will be used to bring everything together. You must press with an extremely high pressure. So, what is the pressure like here? An all-solid-state battery is typically manufactured under pressures of around 3000 bar. An astronomically high pressure is 3000 bar. It won’t tear apart if you apply pressure to it while it’s at room temperature. Therefore, how do you exert pressure? Warm Isostatic Press (WIP) is an acronym for the phrase. Simply place the pouch inside the water tank, seal the chamber, and use water pressure to apply ultra-high pressure. It’s a close fit. Place the pouch film in a huge pail of water and apply extreme pressure to the battery cell.
Even if the first of these models are expensive, Samsung observers are optimistic that by the time mainstream S-line production begins around 2027, costs will have sufficiently decreased to make electric automobiles using its solid-state battery a realistic option.
