Facebook has announced a new feature called Reels that allows users to create and share short-form videos, similar to TikTok. However, unlike TikTok’s “For You” page that uses an algorithm to show users personalized content, Reels will rely on users’ past interactions on Facebook to personalize the content they see.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Personalized Recommendations Reels will use your past interactions on Facebook, such as pages you’ve liked and content you’ve engaged with, to suggest videos you might be interested in. This means that Reels will take into account your interests and preferences, giving you a more personalized experience.
  2. Following Creators Like TikTok, Reels allows users to follow creators and see their content in a dedicated feed. However, Reels also suggests creators based on your past interactions, again personalizing the experience.
  3. Public Reels In addition to personalized content, Reels also features a “Public Reels” section that allows users to discover new content from a wider range of creators. This is similar to TikTok’s “For You” page, but instead of relying on an algorithm, Reels will surface content from creators who have chosen to make their Reels public.

While Reels may not be a direct competitor to TikTok, it’s clear that Facebook is trying to capture some of the app’s success by offering a similar experience. By personalizing content based on users’ past interactions, Reels could offer a unique experience that sets it apart from TikTok and other short-form video platforms.
