Google announced today on the Android Developers Blog that the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro are the first Android phones to support only 64-bit apps. The operating system on these phones no longer supports 32-bit apps. 64-bit applications run faster because they can access instructions that 32-bit applications cannot. Furthermore, Google claims that when operating with 64-bit apps, newer CPUs can produce up to 25% better performance. In a message to app developers, Google stated, "Our ecosystem is ready thanks to the efforts and collaboration of the the whole Android community." The transition from 32-bit to 64-bit Android devices necessitated numerous changes to the platform, tooling, Play, and, of course, your apps. We began by adding 64-bit support in 2014, and announced policy changes in 2017. New Pixel 7 Pro owners reporting scrolling issues. "These memory savings mean fewer out-of-memory conditions, simply means less jank and fewer background app kills," Google says. Yes, we could all benefit from less junk on our phones. Nobody wants their chains janked. Using just 64-bit apps improves your phone's security. This is due to the larger address space, which enables the use of address space layout randomization (ASLR), which prevents attackers from exploiting memory corruption caused by bugs. Creating 64-bit apps also provides developers with better tools for detecting memory errors and enhancing app quality. The transition to 64-bit apps may also enable phone manufacturers to distribute updates more quickly and easily. Google Play Shows Pixel 7 And Pixel 7 Pro Updates But Not Actually Available The company also informs app developers that "Whereas 64-bit-only devices will become more popular as phones join Android Auto in this category, 32-bit-only devices will decline. According to the company, 32-bit devices will remain dominant for Android Go, Android TV, and Android Wear. Google Play now offers pre-launch reports that trace and report compatibility issues on 64-bit devices only. continue to be crucial for Android Go, Android TV, and Android Wear". With the release of iOS 11 in 2017, Apple already made the transition to 64-bit app support.
