Here's All You Need To Know Before Replacing MacBook Pro's Battery

2009 or later versions

You can be impacted if the pop-up window reads "MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015)". To see if you qualify for a free battery replacement, you must copy the serial number from this window and paste it on Apple's special webpage. Batteries before 2009 Apple began moving away from removable batteries to "built-in" batteries, which are essentially cemented into the MacBook chassis, about 14 years ago. Apple's justification was simple: built-in batteries were smaller, safer for consumers, and allowed them to continue manufacturing thinner MacBooks. Unfortunately, a built-in battery cannot be changed by the user. The only MacBook Pro models with replaceable batteries are the earlier models.

How can you be certain that your model has a detachable battery?

Two simple qualifications should be noted. The following MacBook Pro models have detachable batteries:

• Models from before mid-2009, when the 13- and 15-inch MacBook Pro notebooks initially experienced the battery changeover.
• Versions devoid of Retina screens.

If your older Pro satisfies all of these requirements, you need to go behind the chassis, where you might see a detachable battery. A panel that is screwed on or latches should be used to secure the battery. If so, you can get your model a fresh battery. You should be able to manage the replacement quickly and easily. Depending on your model, a replacement battery can cost anywhere from $20 to $70.

New MacBook batteries for 2018 and beyond

For Apple users who need to change their batteries, there is fortunately some hope. Apple is working on creating a brand-new procedure for changing out Mac laptop batteries. Users will soon be able to replace the battery from the comfort of their living room fast and correctly. Users had to completely replace the metal top shell of the laptop after attempting to remove them since they were difficult to do so. Apple has switched to a different strategy with its more recent laptops. With specialized tools, you may replace your old batteries with new adhesive without destroying the top case. The 16-inch and 13-inch MacBook Pro batteries cannot be replaced because the updated replacement technique is only compatible with MacBook Air models 2018 and later.
