An unmanned Starship cargo trip that might fly as early as mid-2026 has been reserved for a startup company by the name of Astrolab, which made the announcement on Friday. According to Jaret Matthews, CEO of Astrolab, "This is SpaceX's first commercial cargo contract to the lunar surface," adding that his company was one of a small number of clients on board the voyage. The goal of Astrolab is to one day send people, supplies, and equipment over the lunar surface. The Flexible Logistics and Exploration (FLEX) rover is somewhat larger than NASA's Perseverance rover on Mars and is around the size of a Jeep Wrangler. It can go up to 15 miles per hour and has a robotic arm for helping with cargo. Also, FLEX has room for up to two astronauts. Read More: Elon Musk: What Happened to the Feb Window? SpaceX Starship to Try Orbital Launch in March Astrolab asserts that once FLEX touches down on the Moon, it will be the biggest rover ever to explore the lunar surface. According to Matthews, customers are already lined up to employ the rover to transport freight during the 2026 Starship trip. Going further into the future, Matthews claimed that FLEX might help establish a long-term human presence on the Moon and elsewhere. In the end, he stated, "we aim to have a fleet of rovers on the Moon and Mars." And I firmly believe that these vehicles will ultimately serve as the engine for the off-Earth economy.
