London’s new electric tram-buses charge in only 10 minutes

TfL (Transport for London) has unveiled its most recent clean public transportation initiative: 20 purely electric tram buses. From 2023, these futuristic, bubble-like London buses will operate on the 358 route from Crystal Palace to Orpington. Go Ahead, London's largest bus operator, purchased the electric tram buses from Spanish e-mobility manufacturer Irizar. The tram bus in London is officially called the iTram. It is the first time Irizar has produced and sold right-hand drive trams in the United Kingdom. The 12-meter-long (39-foot-long) tram buses will charge for just 10 minutes on one of London's longest bus routes, as Irizar explained in an announcement yesterday. The inverted pantograph system is also used on buses operating on the all-electric route 132 between North Greenwich and Bexleyheath. Inside, the tram buses have USB chargers, Wi-Fi, Braille buttons, luggage racks, and passenger information. TfL says that if the 358 route is successful, it will roll out more electric tram buses on all other London routes in the future. In London, approximately 850 electric buses are currently in use for public transportation. TfL has pledged to have a zero-emission bus fleet in London by 2034 in its Bus Action Plan, and it says that with additional funding, it may be able to move the target forward to 2030.
