Microsoft Set To Bet Big With Rumored $10 Billion Investment Into OpenAI

Marketers and technologists believe that ChatGPT's rapidly rising popularity—the app was only released in late November—may signal the start of a new trend of leveraging AI to create text-based content. The hype surrounding AI has grown in light of rumors that Microsoft may spend up to $10 billion in OpenAI, the startup that created ChatGPT and DALL-E. Microsoft declined to comment on "speculation," a spokeswoman told Digiday. Depending on whom you speak to, generative AI in marketing is either well-received or barely noticed. Agencies report that many clients are eager to try it out. (Earlier this week, Ryan Reynolds starred in a new commercial for Mint Mobile that was created with ChatGPT.) Mark Himmelsbach, founder partner of the advertising firm Episode Four, is one of the agency executives enthusiastic about ChatGPT. He asserts that ChatGPT can support the development of divergent thinking despite its current constraints and notes that the company has already utilized the platform for creating client briefs and strategy work. “The amount of lateral thinking that ChatGPT can provide is an incredible starting point for creativity,” Himmelsbach said. “It still needs that human touch. We say that ideas can come from anywhere, but have to be honed by a few.”
It's yet unclear whether the business will be able to assist Microsoft in increasing its market share. According to Erik Hamilton, vice president of social and search at the independent media company Good Apple, the capacity of OpenAI to provide fresh relevance to Bing would be a surprising turnabout. However, he claimed that startups, not established giants, are more likely to upend rival giants: Are crowds of people going to converge on Bing? That, in my opinion, would be a startling turnabout from how the internet has operated.
Although all ChatGPT applications for paid advertising are yet purely speculative, some see an even greater potential. If ChatGPT develops a means to display photos and information about products based on whatever a user is enquiring about, for instance, Hamilton predicted that marketers would likely pay "sky high" prices. OpenAI may be used to assist marketers in creating blog posts based on popular keywords even before it is included into search.
“Google’s right to quake in their boots a little bit,” Hamilton said. “But if they’re going to lose market share, it’s not going to be for a long time.” According to Fergal Reid, director of machine learning at Intercom, ChatGPT may potentially be useful for customer support operations. For instance, it might assist customer service organizations in providing more inventive and better answers to inquiries. The business has been working on creating its own ChatGPT-free bot technology. Reid claimed that creating their own bots has been particularly difficult because of what he calls "hallucinations," which occur when an AI struggles to come up with a reasonable explanation for a problem even though it may not be the correct one. “The real magic comes when we look at this and really reevaluate what capabilities are new,” he said. “But then we get used to this stuff as a building block… We learn what it’s really great at, what are its strengths.”
