NASA & Google Collaborate to Show the Solar System in AR

Google and NASA struck a partnership to show people stunning 3D models of the solar system in AR or augmented reality. Thus, space freaks can now experience a little of what's it like to be in outer space. And thanks to Google and NASA, who teamed up and made it possible for people to see over 60 AR 3D models of solar system bodies and robotic explorers using nothing but their smartphones.

How to see the solar system in 3D?

Space enthusiasts can now see any planet of the solar system they want (even Pluto) and the Sun by searching for them on Google. And because of the new partnership with NASA, they will now see a new '3D mode' box on the side of their Google Search page on the desktop or below the initial search result on the phone.  NASA and Google   Furthermore, on the desktop, users will see a 3D model of whatever space body they searched for, which they can then manipulate and explore according to their wish. In addition, they will see a set of well-curated facts and figures. But space freaks will experience this feature best with their smartphone. So, when using the phone, they need to click "View in your space" from the 3D model window to access the new AR feature. Moreover, the AR feature will project entire planets into the real-world environment via users' phone screens. NASA and Google   And here's the best part—these models are entirely 3D and scalable. Thus, users can make them as tiny or as large as they want, physically walk around them, and study all the bodies of the solar system (even their natural satellites) to their hearts' content.  Moreover, space enthusiasts can also project AR models of famous spacecraft and launchers into the environment with this Google feature. In addition, they can view recreated models of Neil Armstrong's historic spacesuit, the Apollo 11 command capsule, and the revolutionary spacecraft, the Voyager 1 probe (now about 14.6 billion miles away from Earth).

What's More

NASA and Google partnership also saw the addition of the 'Our Solar System' project to Google Arts & Culture. It allows people to dive deep into the solar system's history and learn about humanity's ongoing mission to explore and understand the universe. Lastly, there are even organized tours of the solar system, features on planets, and galleries of astrophotography captured by spacecraft and astronauts.
