We shall soon learn whether the moon actually contains water and ice. According to PhysOrg, NASA plans to launch its Lunar Flashlight on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket in the middle of November.
The Lunar Flashlight is a tiny satellite that is about the size of a suitcase. It is currently flying low over the lunar South Pole and will use lasers to illuminate these shadowy craters.
The satellite will be launched and placed on a trajectory that will take it three months to reach its science orbit. Then, on the Moon's surface, it will locate water ice, especially in regions that have not yet been found or investigated.
After launch, the mission's navigators will direct it beyond the moon; after that, gravity from the Earth and the Sun will gently pull it back until it settles into a science-collecting orbit.
It is crucial to remember that small satellites can only carry a finite quantity of fuel, making fuel-intensive orbits impossible.
The Lunar Flashlight is also the second NASA mission to use this style of trajectory.
