Ed Bott, a senior editor got a request to help urgently in retrieving data from the old PC which was about eight to nine years old but was in good condition. The user had forgotten the password and the system had some important documents that he needed immediately. When the user tried to log in, he received a message stating hardware failed. Under normal circumstances, the data can be retrieved but not if it is encrypted. Use a boot disk to get to Windows and copy the data on the hard drive using DOS commands. Another option is to disassemble the laptop and remove the hard drive and use a USB-to-SATA kit to convert the internal drive to the USB port. The StarTech adapter is good but you will have to check for its compatibility. If the drive is encrypted with Windows or BitLocker, the job is more difficult. If you had signed in using Microsoft, the key to recovery will be through https://onedrive.com/recoverykey but this is unavailable for local accounts. It is probably impossible to get through if you forgot to back up the key after encrypting the drive. Retrieve Data

This old trick may be a useful tool; booting from the recovery drive and tricking Windows into allowing access to Command Prompt where the password can be reset.
