Shutterstock Announces Its Partnership WIth OpenAI To Provide AI Image Using DALL-E-API

Shutterstock stated that they have partnered with OpenAI to supply AI image synthesis services using the DALL-E API. The company states that the users will be able to download images with text messages when the service is available. Shutterstock states that they will be compensating the artists who have worked towards an AI model developed in response to the criticism for AI-generated work. DALL-E is a product developed by OpenAI for deep-learning image synthesis. It can produce new images which are based on prompts. For example, if the user types, “children playing in the park,” DALL-E gives out the image as per the user's words. To make it worse, the models generate images by analyzing the artist's work without their consent. With the new partnership, users can create images of their own that are not available in the library. The announcement was made in a press release. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman disclosed that in 2021, the company gave them the license to access images from Shutterstock to train DALL-E. He stated, "The data we licensed from Shutterstock was critical to the training of DALL-E.” However, according to reports, even though Shutterstock has welcomed AI generative editing tools, it will not let the contributors sell their artwork that has not been developed on OpenAI as there may be concerns with image sources used in training non-DALL-E images. The company has not made it clear how the compensation model works but their spokesperson described a “revenue share compensation model.” In September, Getty Images outlawed the selling of AI-generated images but there is a report of it partnering with Bria, an Israeli company to give editing tools that are powered by AI. It can change the existing image’s content like changing a person's skin color or expression.  Craig Peters, CEO of Getty Images shared his feeling about accepting AI-generated artwork at a go because of issues with the copyright, "I think we’re watching some organizations and individuals and companies being reckless," "I think that’s dangerous. I don’t think it’s responsible. I think it could be illegal.”
