Teachers Turn to ChatGPT for Grading!

Some teachers are assessing student essays using Writable, an artificial intelligence (AI) application that dramatically changes educational technology. The development of this technology offers educators exciting new opportunities, but it raises questions about the effects it may have on student learning and relationships between teachers and students. A Helping Hand, or a Shortcut? Writable, which was recently acquired by educational resources company Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, analyzes student work and provides feedback using ChatGPT, an AI language model. Although the tool claims to save time and produce more actionable remarks, several experts disagree. Drawbacks on the Horizon Critics worry that relying on AI for grading could lead to:
  • Diminished personalised feedback: An excessive reliance on automated technologies may lessen the value of personalised teacher input, which is essential to the growth of each student.
  • Teacher knowledge erosion: Over-reliance on AI could make teachers less knowledgeable about the subjects they teach, which could reduce their efficacy as a whole.
  • Privacy concerns: Cloud-based AI tool use raises concerns regarding student and instructor data privacy, necessitating careful thought and suitable safeguards.
  • AI vulnerability: Much like any AI system, ChatGPT is not perfect and may produce false information that could lead to students being misled or mistakes being introduced into lesson plans.
The Other Side of the Coin Proponents of AI grading tools like Writable argue that they can: Free up teacher time: AI can free up more time for teachers to engage in individualized instruction, resulting in more in-depth learning opportunities, by automating some monotonous duties. Empower educators: According to its creators, Writable frees educators from time-consuming grading duties so they can concentrate on more effective teaching techniques. A Divided Opinion In a recent survey, over half of parents polled expressed mixed feelings about artificial intelligence-assisted grading. In light of this, a thorough review of these technologies must be undertaken before they can be implemented widely in the classroom. The Future of AI in Education With AI's advancements and expansion into more industries, it is expected to become increasingly prevalent within academia. Writable, along with other AI-powered grading applications like Crowdmark, Gradescope, and EssayGrader, is only one illustration of this trend. In the future, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in education will need to be balanced between the possible advantages and disadvantages of the technology, so that the indispensable role of human teachers and individualized learning can be enhanced rather than simply replaced by technology.
