The Army cannot spend $400 million on Microsoft HoloLens headsets

Congress rejects the Army's proposal for $400 million to purchase up to 6,900 HoloLens-based headsets. Previous headsets were said to cause "mission-affecting physical impairments" during testing, such as headaches and nausea. The Army says it will fix those in version 1.2, which will feature "a new form factor" to address the physical symptoms. The headsets are part of an arguably multibillion-dollar Microsoft-Army contract. Approximately 1,000 soldiers have so far given feedback based on 100,000 hours of testing with older versions. They provide real-time sensor and navigation system data, along with night and thermal vision. The Army could order 120,000 Xbox headsets in the next decade, but Congress has put a halt to new orders for the time being. A Senate committee reportedly reduced the Army's purchasing request for some more headsets in 2023 in 2022. So far, the Army has ordered approximately 5,000 headsets, but its agreement allows it to order up to 100,000 over a ten-year period.
