Microsoft has been hard at work on Windows 11 updates, from more Start Menu tweaks to changes to default apps. Now the company is experimenting with changes to the Print Screen key under Windows 11.
On Windows 11 (and Windows 10), there are numerous ways to take a screenshot, but if your keyboard has a dedicated Print Screen key, pressing it will immediately capture the image and copy it to the clipboard. Since Windows 95, that has been the default behavior. However, Microsoft is currently testing a different behavior in test builds of Windows 11.
The Print Screen key no longer immediately takes a screenshot and saves it to the clipboard but instead launches the Snipping Tool when you press it in Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 23419, which is currently being tested in the Dev Channel of the Windows Insider program. Microsoft says the option can be reverted from Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard, and if you’ve changed that setting before, nothing will change.
For the time being, none of the numerous other ways to take a screenshot in Windows 11 have changed. There’s also a potential Microsoft could alter this behavior before it spreads out to everyone. As there is no visible cue that anything happened after pressing Print Screen, the new behavior may be easier for novice Windows users to understand, but it may upset seasoned users.
Microsoft didn’t mention if Win + Fn + Spacebar will still work for immediately taking a screenshot. If not, adjusting the setting back should also do the task.
