A component of Windows 11 called the Windows Subsystem for Android, or WSA for short, enables some Android games and applications to run on your computer alongside regular Windows programs. A significant upgrade is soon to be made.
An update is currently trickling out to participants in the Windows Subsystem for Android Preview Program, according to a GitHub discussion from
Microsoft. It's so early in the process that it hasn't even reached regular Windows Insiders yet. A few minor system enhancements and new APIs for app developers are included in the latest version (2211.40000.7.0), which brings the system up to Android 13 standards. Many of the new features in Android 13, such as the taskbar for large displays and an enhanced notification media player, have no effect on the virtualized Android Subsystem.

The upgrade also includes a new command for shutting down WSA, which is great for scripting and other automation. With a 50% speedup in the 10% percentile of devices, Microsoft reports that boot times have improved. Also expected to function more effectively than before are mouse click inputs, clipboard, application resizing, and accessing media files. The latest update likewise includes support for shortcuts from Android apps. When you right-click an icon in the taskbar for an Android app, any available shortcuts will show up in the jumplist.

Microsoft didn't specify when everyone running Windows 11 will receive the Subsystem upgrade, although it should happen following the conclusion of the bug-testing phase in the Preview Program and Windows Insiders Program. Following an update to Android 12.1 earlier this year, the update checks off numerous items on Microsoft's list of WSA enhancements.
