The superhero fantasies of Harry Shum Jr. are coming true. The actor, 40, assumes the role of the latest Brainiac, a famed DC villain with 12th-level intelligence who this time is working for the good people, in his most recent movie, Legion of Super-Heroes. Additionally, he co-stars with Supergirl, Superman's teenage cousin, and the two of them put aside their personal conflicts to try to fight the Dark Circle, an organization with a sinister agenda. Furthermore, Shum's entrance into the DC universe was a bizarre event. He told PEOPLE: "The influence that [DC] had on us as a kid is definitely making this even more exciting. I was watching it the other day, the film, and I was like, 'What the hell, man? How did I even get here? How did I get to be able to voice these characters and to be part of this huge production?' So my 8-year-old self would be ecstatic right now, which I am as well." Shum's co-stars in the film are Zombies' Meg Donnelly (Supergirl) and his former Glee co-star Darren Criss (Superman). However, his meeting with the Glee alum was less dramatic than Shum had anticipated. Additionally, the Warner Bros. crew had to seamlessly combine all the voiceovers that had been separately recorded to create the illusion that the actors were recording in the same room. Shum remarked on this, "It's really a testament to the team and the animators to be able to make that feel so real and string it all together."

Additional details

Harry Shum Jr. is also playing Benson "Blue" Kwan, a new surgical intern on the most recent season of Grey's Anatomy. He claimed that the seasoned cast, notably Ellen Pompeo, who will leave the show after its 19th season, greeted him with open arms. But one thing that was very universal within what they were trying to tell us is that 'You're here because of you,' " the actor said. "You're here because of what you bring to the table. Always keep bringing that to the table. Don't let anything hinder that." Lastly, Legion of Super-Heroes will be available on February 7 on Blu-ray and digital platforms.
