Disney Cracks Down on Password Sharing, Offering Paid Access for Outsiders

Movie night with friends has just become a little bit more challenging. This summer, Disney Plus is taking tough measures against password sharing, requiring customers to create separate accounts or pay an extra charge to share with others outside of their homes. Like Netflix, the streaming behemoth wants to discourage account sharing and increase the number of subscribers. Accounts that are suspected of "improper sharing" may begin to display a pop-up this summer that encourages them to subscribe separately. Would you like to share with someone who is not your housemate? Disney plans to provide an "additional fee" option, but the precise price is still unknown. Following changes to their terms of service earlier this year that formally outlawed exchanging passwords with non-household members, Disney Plus and Hulu have now made this move. On January 25th, new subscribers experienced the pain; on March 14th, current members will experience the same outcome. Paid sharing is a good opportunity, according to Chief Financial Officer Hugh Johnston: "It's one that our competitor is taking advantage of and one that sits in front of us." He continued, "We've got some very specific actions that we're taking in the next couple of months." In addition to the recent loss of 1.3 million subscribers in the US and Canada due to price increases last year, this crackdown also comes with the March release of a combined Disney Plus and Hulu app experience. Disney, though, is not giving up, highlighting the impending debut of a brand-new live sports streaming service in collaboration with Fox and Warner Bros. Discovery.
