An old computer mouse may seem like something that should be thrown away, but it can actually be repurposed and recycled in a number of ways. From the easy to the more challenging, here are five ideas for what to do with an old computer mouse.
- Make a geeky Christmas tree ornament: Use the mouse as a core and cover it with felt or fabric to create a unique ornament for your tree.
- Repurpose it as a toothbrush or soap holder in the bathroom: Remove the electronics inside the mouse and use the hollow as a soap case or cut a slot in the front to use it as a toothbrush holder.
- Dress it up as a children's toy with paint and craft supplies: Use paint and other craft materials to decorate the mouse and make it into a fun toy for kids.
- Use the mouse case to build a working drone: With electronic skills and the availability of cheap components, a computer mouse can be repurposed into a working drone.
- Design a counterfeit coin detector: A study shows how an optical mouse sensor and a programmed microprocessor can be used to create a cheap fake coin detector.
Recycling a computer mouse is a better option than throwing it away as e-waste. The mouse contains recyclable metals and plastic, as well as hazardous metals such as lead and cadmium. To dispose of an old mouse, try using a local recycling center or search the manufacturer's website for recycling programs. Alternatively, if the mouse is still in working condition, consider freecycling it to find it a new user.
