One more tip can help you save time and money before you throw away your computer and spend hundreds, or even thousands, on a replacement: a factory reset. To successfully and simply restore your Windows 10 or 11 computer to its default settings, follow the procedures listed below. Additionally, if Windows consistently slows down for you, see our article on how to speed it up. How to factory reset on Windows 10 | Tom's Guide Photo Credit: Tom's Guide

Backup your PC first

You should backup any crucial data you don't want to lose before you reset your machine. There are additional objects to back up in addition to papers, pictures, music, and movies. Make sure you have installation files for every piece of software you'll need to reinstall, are aware of all the passwords you've saved, have exported all of your browser bookmarks, and are familiar with all of your saved passwords. Be sure to save app-specific information as well, such as custom filters saved in a photo editing program, game saves, and emails if using an offline client.

What is a factory reset? OS Windows 10

The reset option in Windows 10 may be found in the settings panel. It may replace all drivers and reset all settings to create a brand-new edition of Windows 10 if you so desire. It should be noted that this can technically differ from the "factory reset" option offered by manufacturers. If you'd like to get your PC back to the state it was in when you first took it out of the box, consult your manual or contact technical support. On the hard drive, the manufacturer might have created unique partitions, or they might be able to offer a factory restoration image on bootable media:
  • Open the Action Center, select the All settings tile, and then click the Notifications icon on the taskbar (or press Windows button + A). Additionally, you can open the Start Menu by clicking the Start button, then the Gear symbol.
  • Click Update & Security in step two.
  • Choose Recovery from the list on the left. You'll notice two options on the right. The first technique, Reset this PC, is the one we'll utilize in this instruction.
  • If you have a bit more technical know-how, you might want to take a look at the second option, Advanced startup. It is used to install a whole other operating system or to make more extensive changes to your machine. If your computer's maker offers a factory restore image or external drive with the image, you can use it to restore your system to its factory state, including with any proprietary software, which is useful.

  • It's probably best to leave this setting alone until you're positive that you understand exactly what each of the alternatives does.
  • When you're ready, select Reset This PC and then click the Get Started option. The options Keep my files and Remove everything will be presented in a new window, as illustrated below.
  • Pick a source, either a local reinstall or a cloud download.
  • To modify the default reset settings, select the Choose settings option on the next screen. If not, move through to Step 9. Step 8: Toggle the appropriate setting next to it by clicking the corresponding button, and then click Confirm.
