Mastodon, Twitter Alternative hits 1 million users

For the first time in its history, Mastodon, a free, open-source, decentralized microblogging social media network, has more than one million active monthly members. The founder of Mastodon, Eugen Rochko, announced the platform's explosive growth today. He pointed out that nearly half of the new users (489,000) have joined since Elon Musk finalized the acquisition of Twitter on October 27, 2022. Due to Twitter's similar layout and social feed architecture, there has been a noticeable wave of user movement to Mastodon. Mastodon offers user tagging (mentions), privacy posting choices, a hashtags system, a chronological feed of 500-character postings called "toots," and more. Some users are leaving Twitter as a result of the social media platform's new owner, Elon Musk, who announced contentious changes to its freedom of speech and account verification policies almost immediately after completing the takeover. When Twitter announced significant staff cutbacks, which the community found unpopular, a second, even more significant wave of users began migrating to Mastodon. A federation system connects the network of separate servers under a network of coexisting instances, effectively enabling communication between Mastodon users on any server. Mastodon does not belong to a single person or business and is not run for profit because of this decentralised strategy. As a result, there are no ads on Mastodon, though users may still independently promote services. Therefore, users shouldn't send confidential or sensitive information using Mastodon DMs.
