In the race to develop AI, one topic remains constant: Should code be kept secret or made publicly available as "open-source"? While Meta has made its language model, LLaMA, accessible to academics and researchers, OpenAI has held data for initiatives like GPT-4 close to its chest.
The Financial Times claims that Meta is about to "imminently" release a new commercial version that businesses can personalize.
The move could enable firms to create specialized software using the new methodology, helping Meta catch up to rival AI developers OpenAI and Google. "The competitive landscape of AI is going to completely change in the coming months, in the coming weeks maybe, when there will be open source platforms that are actually as good as the ones that are not," Yann LeCun, vice-president and chief AI scientist at Meta, said at a conference in July. Additionally, Meta might develop AI chatbots that are tailored to each type of user, such as a person or a company.

Open-source approaches undoubtedly come with both advantages and disadvantages. Given the enormous amount of data an AI is collecting, it can learn more quickly if a diverse range of humans are given access to its many capabilities. Additional eyes can also identify bugs and security flaws, which enables developers to address these issues earlier. On the other hand, not all users of the code will have the best of intentions, which can have harmful effects when employing a technology that many people in and outside the IT industry are worried about.

At launch, Meta's commercial AI model should be accessible for free, but this could alter later. Sources familiar with Meta claim that if enterprise customers wish to customize or alter the model, the company may eventually charge them.
