Meta's Own Creators Aren't Liking Its Metaverse World

The Verge said that Meta's Horizon Worlds metaverse app is so terrible that even the developers don't want to use it. The company Meta, formerly known as Facebook, placed a significant wager on virtual reality places. These documents describe Horizon Worlds as "a synchronous social network where creators can develop compelling worlds." In other words, it's Second Life in virtual reality with Meta branding. No one has ever been able to definitively state what makes a metaverse unique or different from online spaces that have been present for decades, thus its revolutionary promises have always been as nebulous and elusive as fairy dust. And even though they bet everything on it in a society where nobody under 30 has ever heard of Facebook, it appears that Meta's attempts to understand it has failed so miserably that even its designers have stopped using it. Metaverse World According to The Verge, they have seen internal memos from Meta (Facebook) that discuss how their flagship VR app for the so-called "metaverse" is so rife with bugs, "quality issues," and "papercuts" that it's "too hard for our community to experience the magic of Horizon," in accordance with feedback from playtesters. “For many of us, we don’t spend that much time in Horizon and our dogfooding dashboards show this pretty clearly,” The Verge says the VP of Metaverse, Vishal Shah, wrote in a memo sent to staff last month. (Dogfooding is, I have learned, staff using a product before it’s released to the public.) “Why is that?” he continues. “Why don’t we love the product we’ve built so much that we use it all the time? The simple truth is, if we don’t love it, how can we expect our users to love it?” Another message dated September 30 promises to "hold managers accountable" for requiring that their employees utilise Horizon at least once per week, proving that the request for people to spend more time in VR certainly didn't get any attention. Metaverse World “Everyone in this organization should make it their mission to fall in love with Horizon Worlds,” he wrote. “You can’t do that without using it. Get in there. Organize times to do it with your colleagues or friends, in both internal builds but also the public build so you can interact with our community. "Shah commented that workers should be eager to "present new users to top-notch worlds that will ensure their first visit is a success" in order to "highlight ways in which the experience currently falls short." He also noted that "our onboarding experience is confusing and stressful for users." The question that emerges is why the corporation would need to "hold management accountable" for consumption if it really had discovered the next big thing in computing.
