Mississippi apartment hostage incident resulted in the death of a 1-year-old girl and a 9-year-old boy

According to authorities, Monday's alleged Mississippi apartment hostage incident turned fatal and resulted in the death of two children. A news statement from the Coahoma County Sheriff's Office revealed that Marquez Griffin, 25, was detained during a police standoff in Jonestown where he is accused of shooting two children dead, a 1-year-old girl and a 9-year-old boy, and holding a third child at gunpoint.

Details about the case

Around two in the morning, an off-duty sheriff's deputy who lives nearby came to the site after hearing a report about a child who had been shot, according to authorities. There, according to the police, they discovered that a man was allegedly holding a kid at gunpoint. In addition, they managed to get the child to safety before the defendant was arrested, according to the sheriff's office. However, deputies didn't find the two kids with gunshot wounds inside the house until after Griffin was arrested, according to the police. Furthermore, authorities reported that while one victim was pronounced dead at the spot, the other was brought to a hospital, where the child eventually passed away. However, a family member identified the 1-year-old child who passed away in the hospital as Averi Jones, according to WREG. She didn't deserve this. Her mom told me she was asleep and he put a pillow over her head and shot her in her head." Additionally, she added that Griffin is a "friend" of Averi's mother,  and she expressed disbelief at his suspected role in the Mississippi apartment hostage incident. "She told me they were friends and how could a friend do this to you?" she asked. On another note, according to the sheriff's office, Griffin had recently returned to the region from Arlington, Texas. However, the sheriff's office has not yet revealed a potential reason for the violence. According to officials, he is being detained at the Coahoma County Adult Detention Center on allegations of murder and aggravated assault.
