Now Search Nearby Popular Locations on Instagram via Searchable Map

Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s CEO, recently announced the company is rolling out a searchable map feature in Instagram’s latest update. It will enable users to discover popular local businesses or attractions nearby. Additionally, the searchable map will give users a list of popular tagged locations around them. And will also show them posts about a particular place. Plus, users can filter the location results by specific categories like restaurants, spas, salons, cafes, etc.

Searchable maps

Previously, the map on Instagram only showed posts of that location. However, with the update, users can tap on a tagged place or location to search it on the map. Then, access the filtering options and move around the map to discover other popular places nearby.  In addition, users can also find new locations in the Explore tab. They can then tap on a search result, which will direct them to that place on the map. Besides that, they can also save a location or business if they wish to check them out later. Finally, users can access the saved places in the Profile > tapping on the hamburger menu in the top right > Saved instagram-map-icon Meta first started testing the searchable map feature last year in some countries. But, now, according to Zuckerberg’s post, the updated map is available to all users on the platform. In addition, meta claims that the new searchable map will provide users a more immersive experience when discovering new places through tagged posts, guides, or stories.  Furthermore, users can also share places through DMs with friends or group chats. And, if their profile is public, they can use location tags or stickers in their content so that it appears on the map for their viewers. It is similar to the feature Snapchat offers, enabling users to post public stories attached to a specific location.

Conclusion

The searchable map feature came as Google’s Senior VP Prabhakar Raghavan noted that younger users often use Instagram and TikTok instead of Google Search or Maps to find places or locations. Besides, Instagram has included several e-commerce features in the service recently. Thus, the updated map seems like another way to make the platform more friendly for local businesses.
