Nvidia Cancels Low-Cost Graphics Card, Leaving Only Expensive Models

If you were preparing to purchase a new Nvidia 40-series GPU this year, you may need to save even more money than you anticipated. This is due to the GPU manufacturer's confirmation that it intends to "unlaunch" the previously planned and less expensive 12GB RTX 4080 model. Only the more expensive and faster 16GB RTX 4080 will be available next month. Nvidia formally announced its next line of high-end PC graphics cards a few weeks ago, after much rumour and speculation. The plan was then to release two different RTX 4080 GPUs in November: a 16GB RTX 4080 ($1199) and a 12GB RTX 4080 ($899). During the same event, it also announced a $1600 4090. The company says the card is "fantastic," but having two different names for the same card is "confusing." This echoes consumer outrage following the recent 40-series announcements. "The RTX 4080 16GB is incredible, and it's on track to delight gamers worldwide on November 16th." Of course, it's difficult not to see this move as a way for Nvidia to push more of its customers—many of whom have been putting off purchasing a new GPU for a few years now as cards have remained scarce—to spend more money on a more expensive card. While initial previews of the cheaper 12GB 4080 showed it to be significantly slower than the more expensive 16GB version, it was still nice to have at least one option for less than $1,000. But that's not all.
