According to the grandmother of the murdered toddler, Simon Quinton's mother has been placed on suicide watch in jail. The FBI confirmed on Monday that the bones found in a dump in Georgia belonged to Quinton, a 20-month-old boy whose mother had reported him missing in October. Leilani Simon, his mother, was detained last week on suspicion of both his death and disappearance. According to a statement from the FBI, Quinton was connected to the human remains found at the Waste Management Superior Landfill in Savannah after a roughly four-week search using DNA analysis. A week after the child went missing on October 5, the search got underway. Investigators asserted that they had "evidence" that directed them to the location. Billie Howell, the grandmother of Quinton, claims that she hasn't seen or spoken to Leilani since she informed the FBI that her daughter was a "flight risk" before to her detention. This is according to WTOC. Leilani has been placed on suicide watch, she said, and other jail inmates have been calling to inform her on her status even though they are unable to contact with her directly. The case was transferred from the Chatham County Police Department to the District Attorney's Office on Monday after the landfill search was finished. Six weeks have passed since the command center at L Scott Stell Park was set up, but it is gradually being taken down. Although the FBI trailer is still there, it will shortly be taken down. After authorities found the remains on November 21, Leilani, the baby's mother, was taken into custody. She was accused of intentional murder, concealing a death, false reporting, and making false statements. She was the only suspect being looked into at the time, according to Fox News. The FBI expressed gratitude to Georgia Southern University, forensic anthropologists who assisted in validating possible human remains, specialists in missing and exploited children, as well as all of the officers, agents, and deputies who searched the waste every day. The managers and employees at the landfill were also thanked by the FBI for allowing investigators access to their spaces for several weeks.
