Samsung's 8K Premiere Projector Converts Your Wall Into a Cinema Screen

The Premiere from Samsung is an ultra-short throw projector with an 8K resolution. It's intended to be placed on a low table directly beneath and a few inches from your wall or screen. It can diagonally create images up to 150 inches using special lenses and video processing. There are speakers and Dolby Atmos installed to fill the space with sound and light. While the thought of an 8K projector capable of producing a massive image on any wall sounds appealing, UST projectors aren't as magical as they appear. So far, here's what we know. Because there is presently no readily available 8K content on the market, you will need to purchase your own 8K TV to use this projector. Because it will upconvert it all you send it to 8K, it may look slightly sharper than a standard 4K projector. JVC's Premiere 8K projectors generate 8K resolution on screen by using a 4K imaging chip and a pixel shifter. This is similar to how most high-resolution projectors generate 4K resolution, by starting with a 1080p or lower resolution chip and doubling or quintupling the imager's pixels to achieve roughly 4K resolution. JVC offers several models, with prices ranging from $11,000 and rising from there. [caption id="attachment_80123" align="aligncenter" width="1200"] Samsung[/caption] On the professional side, Digital Projection has several 8K models, but those are for actual movie theaters and other large venues. UST projectors are only a few inches away from a wall and can produce massive images thanks to clever lenses and video processing. Traditional projectors require approximately 10 feet of space to project a 100-inch image. Higher-end models can sit further away from the wall, whereas short-throw models can sit closer to it. The two major drawbacks of all UST projects are cost and image quality - they are typically more expensive and less sharp. Another disadvantage of how they work is a decrease in the contrast ratio. UST projectors typically have lower contrast ratios than conventional projectors, resulting in images that are flatter and lack "punch." Manufacturers typically try to compensate for this by dramatically increasing brightness, however, this does not improve image quality; it helps make the image brighter. Samsung The previous model used lasers to light it, and the new model will most likely do the same. The new model will include Dolby Atmos technology, which the previous model did not. Although Samsung hasn't revealed many details about the new The Premiere, we can make some educated guesses. The 4K The Premiere was available in two sizes: 120-inch and 130-inch. Pricing and availability have yet to be announced by Samsung. Typically, products announced at CES are released in the spring or summer. It's almost certainly not inexpensive. The previous Premiere cost $3,500 for the "120-inch" model and $6,500 for the "130-inch" model. Because the only other consumer 8K PJs start at $11,000 and are for traditional (non-UST) designs, this seems safe to assume the 8K The Premiere will cost at least as much as the previous model, if not much more.
