Stoves Using Natural Gas Emit Toxic Chemicals

In California, researchers took samples from a gas stove and found that all of them were emitting hazardous amounts of benzene, which is known to cause cancer, according to a study released on Environmental Science and Technology. The emission was seven times more than the accepted number. PSE health energy researchers took 159 residential gas stove samples across California. The stoves were fed by Pacific Gas and Electric, Southern California company, and San Diego Gas and Electric, and found 99% benzene in the samples.

Lead author Eric Lebel, a senior scientist at PSE Healthy Energy stated in a press release, “While these leaks are often too small to smell, they can still impact air quality and increase human health risks in our homes,” “We found that just having a gas stove can create benzene concentrations in the kitchen comparable to secondhand smoke.” The study reveals that Californian stoves are giving out benzene which is equivalent to 60,000 gas cars. “Policies that phase out gas appliances are not only good for our climate, our study shows that these policies also provide important public health benefits by improving indoor and outdoor air quality.” California’s Air Resources elected to stop the water heaters and natural gas space by 2030 and by 2035, ban the sale of gas vehicles. In an attempt to work towards global warming, US cities are banning gas stations.
