The new Apple Watches have a longer battery life than we expected.

The Apple Watch will no longer use GPS tracking to conserve battery life. Instead, the watches monitor workouts and distance solely through the built-in GPS chip. This means that the battery life of your iPhone and Apple Watch will be extended. Regardless of the new battery-draining functionality, Apple even now claims an 18-hour battery life.

The announcement was made in a footnote at the bottom of a joint statement on calibrating the Apple Watch for Workout and Activity accuracy. It's also another way Apple has increased the battery life on the Watch, albeit in a subtle way.
