Super Bowl 2023 saw a significant statement from U2. The renowned rock group, in a commercial titled "U2:UV Achtung Baby Live At The Sphere," announced to fans that it will open a brand-new venue in Las Vegas at The Venetian resort this fall during the fourth quarter of the big game on Sunday. Additionally, the group will give its first live concert in four years to inaugurate the brand-new MSG Sphere. U2 also revealed some terrible news: Drummer Larry Mullen Jr. won't be joining the group because he needs time off to have surgery and recover from it. In addition, Drummer Bram van den Berg will take the stage with frontman Bono, guitarist The Edge, and bassist Adam Clayton for the performances at the brand-new venue. The other members of Mullen Jr.'s band said in a statement, "It's going to take all we've got to approach the Sphere without our bandmate in the drum seat, but Larry has joined us in welcoming Bram van den Berg who is a force in his own right." "Bottom line, U2 hasn't played live since December 2019 and we need to get back on stage and see the faces of our fans again," the band continued. "And what a unique stage they're building for us out there in the desert…We're the right band, Achtung Baby the right album, and the Sphere the right venue to take the live experience of music to the next level." What's more

U2 also said their new residence "is more than just a venue, it's a gallery, and U2's music is going to be all over the walls." Additionally, The Edge highlighted in a statement, "In short, it's a canvas of an unparalleled scale and image resolution, and a once-in-a-generation opportunity." Moreover, the guitarist went on to say of U2's planned performances to open the venue, "We all thought about it and decided we'd be mad not to accept the invitation." Lastly, the Venetian's MSG Sphere has 17,500 seats and can accommodate up to 20,000 people. According to a press release, the venue has a new 16K screen that "wraps up, around, and behind the audience."
