Christine Michael, a 16-year-old, was fatally shot on February 10 as she travelled from Brownsville, where she had just seen a basketball game, to her home. In an interview, Michael's grieving mother lamented her passing and said that, right up until the very last, her daughter had been assisting the police in identifying one of the shooters. After driving with her pals along Highway 19 to see a high school basketball game, Michael left for home from Ripley. In a post on Facebook on February 11, Haywood Sheriff Billy Garrett Jr. described how "Someone suddenly started shooting at them" while they were driving. The driver of the vehicle was unscathed, but Michael's other companion, a 13-year-old girl, was hurt. In his Facebook post, Garrett wrote, “The victim of course had been shot. She was in the back seat and emergency personnel was contacted. They arrived on the scene and worked with her some, but she was pronounced dead at the local hospital here in Brownsville."

Michael's mother, Tiffany, narrated the entire incident in an interview with WBBJTV. She said, "They started shooting them from the basketball game from Ripley. She called the police for assistance and they told her that they could not have anybody get to her. She tried to get in the medium lane to keep the people off of her son and them because they were trying to shoot at him from my understanding and they were able to pass her." Tiffany added, "That was the second time they started shooting again. There were plenty of witnesses. Plenty of witnesses. I just want somebody to come forward. My baby was a straight-A student, she was in college, she was class president, she was student council president, she played softball, she was in leadership groups, and she didn’t deserve this. I just want justice." They robbed me. I’ll never have grandchildren by her. I’ll never get to see her walk the line, I’ll never see her accomplish all the things that she started from day one when she put her feet on this earth." Tiffany added that even after getting shot, her daughter identified one of the shooters. She said, “When the incident was going on, she was texting. So, she identified one of the people. To the end, my baby used her smarts to get murder solved.”
