On Friday, February 3, Vanroy Evan Smith was accused of killing Michael Mammone, an emergency room physician, in Orange County Central Court. On February 1st, Mammone, 58, was riding down the Pacific Coast Highway in California when Smith, the driver of a white Lexus, rear-ended him after running a red light. Smith, 39, is accused of running over the married father of two, getting out, and stabbing him. He has been remanded into custody with a $1 million bond. When he arrived in court, he was detained by four deputies and only spoke to confirm his name and birthdate. On February 14, the alleged murderer will appear in court on allegations of employing a deadly weapon for personal gain. According to ABC7, witnesses stated that Smith approached Mammone while holding a BB gun and shouted racial epithets about "white privilege." According to the Orange County Sheriff's Department, there was "no known relationship or purpose" for the crime and that the slurs were unknown to the detectives. Mammone, a 1993 graduate of the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California, has worked as an emergency room physician at Providence Mission Hospital in Laguna Beach since 2011. He also occasionally worked in Santa Ana and Mission Viejo at the Children's Hospital of Orange County. In a statement, the Providence Mission Hospital said, "We are stunned by this devastating tragedy. The entire Mission Hospital family is grieving over the loss of an incredible physician and friend. We will honor Dr Mammone's dedication to our community and passion for medicine by continuing to provide exceptional care." Dawn Aatwal, a cardiologist, stated, "That's the irony of this whole thing. If a patient was brought in his condition, he would have done everything he could to save that person. He has saved so many lives here, and he died very close to where he saved hundreds of lives."

According to public records, Smith, whose middle name is Evan, submitted a bankruptcy petition on behalf of his business in 2014, listing $18,788 in assets and $34,668 in liabilities, as reported by the Orange County Register.
