Victor Bout, a notorious arms trader, landed in Russia on Thursday, according to Russian news organizations. He took part in the prisoner exchange that resulted in the release of US basketball player Brittney Griner by Russia.

Upon reaching Russia, he embraced his mother. “Don’t worry, everything is OK, I love you very much,” Bout reportedly said after reaching Moscow from Abu Dhabi, according to the AFP.

In a sting operation set up by the Drug Enforcement Agency in Bangkok, Bout was apprehended from Bangkok in March 2008 when they pretended to be potential purchasers from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or Farc. After his conviction in 2011, the US extradited him and gave him a 25-year prison sentence. From 2012 to 2022, he was imprisoned for ten years before being freed. Bout is known as the "Merchant of Death," and a book and movie with the same name based on his life exist. As a result of his supplying weapons to fighting parties in places including eastern Europe, Angola, Afghanistan, West Asia, the Central African Republic, and Sierra Leone, among others, British Foreign Office Minister Peter Hain dubbed him the "Merchant of Death." “Bout is the leading merchant of death who is the principal conduit for planes and supply routes that take arms… from East Europe, principally Bulgaria, Moldova and Ukraine to Liberia and Angola,” Hain was quoted as saying by the BBC.

Merchant of Death Who Sustained Wars

Hain continued by saying that Bout was revealed by the UN to be the "heart of a spider's web of illicit arms dealers, diamond brokers, and other operations" who profited from escalating conflicts. Bout asserts that in addition to providing weaponry, he also assisted the French government with aid efforts during the Rwandan genocide and also assisted UN peacekeepers. But Bout is charged with utilizing abandoned Antonov and Ilyushin aircraft built by the Soviet Union to transport weapons to crisis areas. As the USSR fell apart in the 1990s, he amassed a fortune by gathering abandoned airplanes built in the Soviet Union that were dispersed over many airports. Despite being a Russian citizen, he was born in Tajikistan. Others have charged him with providing terrorists in West Asia with weapons. Despite allegations that he also supported Al-Qaeda and Taliban militants, Bout asserts that he provided weapons to Afghan leaders engaged in the war against the Taliban. Additionally, Bout is believed to have sent weaponry to former president of Sierra Leone Charles Taylor, who is accused of aiding war crimes committed during the country's civil war. Additionally, he was charged with providing arms to both sides during times of turmoil in Liberia, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In 2011, a Manhattan court found him guilty of providing anti-aircraft missiles, conspiring to murder Americans and US officials, and assisting a terrorist organization. Bout's mother congratulated Sergey Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, for making sure her son returned home, while his wife referred to his return as a genuine "New Year's present." According to his wife Alla, who was quoted by the news agency AFP, Bout intends to debut an exhibition of his paintings in Saint Petersburg, the second-largest city in Russia, in April.
