Remember those annoying Windows updates that force you to reboot just as you're in the zone? Well, stop worrying! Tech insiders speculate that Windows 11 may soon do away with the need to restart to install some updates, all because of a magical mechanism known as "hot patching." This noteworthy information was discovered by dependable Windows insider Zac Bowden, who noticed an odd modification in a recent Windows 11 preview release. The next 24H2 update's "servicing pipeline" is reportedly being tested by Microsoft, with a major twist: customers who have enabled Virtualization Based Security (VBS) may not need to reboot after installation! Updates can be installed without the dreaded restart thanks to a technique known as "hot patching," which improves computer performance and minimises disruptions. And what do you know? Later this year, the monthly cumulative updates for the 24H2 upgrade might actually come to pass! Hold on, there are a few restrictions. Rebooting is still necessary for larger updates like 24H2, and not all cumulative updates will be hot-patched. To put it another way, hot patching is based on a "baseline update" that is the basis for more focused fixes. The periodic reboot is necessary since this baseline needs to be refreshed every few months. Windows 11 Nevertheless, this is a big step in the right direction for an easier updating process. Envision managing those monthly upgrades without sacrificing your productivity! Bowden offers a plausible scenario that offers a balance between stability and convenience: quarterly reboot-heavy updates interspersed with hot-patched updates. Naturally, since we're still in the testing stage, anything might happen. However, given that Xbox and Windows Server already have hot patching, Windows 11 users have a bright future. If their PCs fulfil the requirements, this possible capability and other enhancements might even convince some Windows 10 sceptics to convert. Keep checking back, Windows users! Updates may be more effective and less disruptive than in the past in the future. If only we could get Microsoft to provide free coffee with each upgrade, that is. ;)
