At CES, Sony and Honda Unveiled Afeela, Their Joint Electric Vehicle Brand

Almost a year after Sony and Honda announced plans to jointly manufacture and sell electric vehicles, the major firms unveiled an Afeela prototype. The four-door sedan was driven onstage at CES on Wednesday as Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida discussed the company's mobility philosophy, which prioritizes building vehicles with autonomous capabilities that can be transformed into "moving entertainment spaces[s]." The Afeelas will be available for preorder in the first quarter of 2025, with sales beginning the following year, according to Yoshida. The first shipments will be made to North American customers in the spring of 2026. Level 3 autonomy means that the car can drive in situations such as traffic jams, but that the human driver must take over when the system asks it. Sony revealed new details about the vehicle's design today, such as the integration of external media along the front of the car, allowing it to communicate with other road users and share necessary information. Epic Games' Unreal Engine, a 3D graphics game engine, will be integrated into Sony-Honda vehicles. Feaela will provide customers with best-in-class entertainment in addition to movies, games, and music. Afeela vehicles will be based on Qualcomm's system-on-a-chip technology, such as their Snapdragon digital chassis. Unreal Engine from Epic Games will be used to develop intuitive interactive photoreal augmentation, which is what Unreal Engine excels at. "The car will be a continuum of our digital lives," Kim Libreri predicted onstage at CES.
