A German backpacker was sentenced to five years in prison after choking a sex worker to death with her dress while they were having sex. Jingai Zhang, 49, passed away while having sex with Tobias Pick, 27, in Launceston, Tasmania, on Boxing Day 2020. Pick, who is now 29 years old, stole $1,604 in cash from Ms. Zhang after she passed away. He also took her phone, which he then dumped in a river. And although initially accused of murder, he eventually pleaded guilty to manslaughter. Furthermore, prior to Ms. Zhang's death, Pick had been touring Australia with his girlfriend for just over a year, the Launceston Supreme Court heard. Additionally, the Mercury reported from the court that he paid her for sex once before she passed away, but turned down her desire to be erotically asphyxiated during that encounter. More details

Then, after a quarrel with his girlfriend on Boxing Day, Tobias Pick went back to meet Jingai Zhang, and this time, according to the testimony given in court, he did choke her consensually. The court was informed that after initially choking her with his hand, they switched places so that Pick was behind Ms. Zhang. She then gave him her dress to hold around her throat. Meanwhile, prosecutor Elizabeth Avery told the court that Ms. Zhang requested light strangulation for "heightened sexual pleasure," but not with the same ferocity as Pick did later. Ms. Zhang's body was later discovered by her boyfriend. [caption id="attachment_69527" align="aligncenter" width="2000"]Jingai Zhang Jingai Zhang died during a sex session with a client.[/caption]

What's more

Justice Robert Pearce said in sentencing Pick on Tuesday that the backpacker's "conduct after her death added to the seriousness of the crime." According to sources, the judge reportedly said in court, "Consent does not justify or excuse acts that cause death." Additionally, a forensic physician testified before the court that Ms. Zhang's neck would have been subjected to severe stress for at least a minute, resulting in bruising and bleeding. On another note, David Simmons, Ms. Zhang's husband, said in a victim impact statement that was read in court that he was unaware that his wife worked as a sex worker or that she had a second partner. According to Mr. Simmons, she was "kind, caring, always worrying about others." On the other hand, Pick sobbed as the specifics of his offense were read in court. Pick, according to Ms. Jenkins, had expressed "great remorse" and had no prior criminal history. Consequently, he received a five-year sentence that began on December 28, 2020. And in June 2023, the German backpacker will be eligible for parole.
