Bringing Terrifying Space Monsters To Life with Performance Capture Technology is Possible

We have seen the game. We have heard the spooky noises. The horrific sights have been observed. The Callisto Protocol is a forthcoming horror/science-fiction adventure directed by Glen Schofield. In this final installment of our behind-the-scenes look, we're looking at how the characters move and how the more motion capture you can do, the better your characters will seem on screen. As Glen points out in the movie, Callisto Protocol makes extensive use of "motion capture" technology. Actors clad in specialized reflective costumes mimic the movements you want your characters to make, while computer-controlled cameras record the action at hundreds of frames per second. Space Monsters When properly executed, "mo-cap" can significantly minimize the amount of time needed to animate a game's characters. Instead of manually hand-animating each frame of a character's movements, expert animators map the actors' actual performance data and movements onto digital models. Even while hand-animating can produce stunning results, motion capture provides a performance that can't be matched because the actor is truly pantomiming, which gives the movements the grace and delicate subtleties that live things give them—nuances that animators must add by hand (and often at considerable time and expense). Glen points out that Striking Distance made the uncommon investment in its own on-site motion capture studio. The majority of studios instead opt to only hire mo-cap time from an existing facility, which saves money but limits the frequency and extent of motion capture's use in video games. Your options are restricted if you only have five days for mo-cap and then decide on a fun new animation you want your protagonist to execute; if you're like Glen, though, you can just walk down to your mo-cap studio and pick up the performance you desire. This offers you a ton of versatility and, more importantly, can improve your performance. “This is about quality and iteration,” adds Glen.
