CEC Will Invest $2.9 Billion For Achieving Zero Emission Transportation Goal

To further the state's zero-emission transportation goal, the California Energy Commission (CEC) will invest $2.9 billion. In a statement obtained by Reuters, the agency described an investment strategy that it predicted would see California construct roughly 90,000 new chargers over the following four years, more than doubling the number of chargers currently available in the state. An additional $1.7 billion has been set aside for infrastructure to support medium and heavy-duty zero-emission vehicles, including those propelled by hydrogen fuel cells. Approximately $900 million will go toward chargers created for light-duty electric vehicles. The commission predicts that California will reach its objective of installing 250,000 chargers by 2025 once financing from utilities and other initiatives is taken into account. Following a directive from Governor Gavin Newsom, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) declared earlier this year that all vehicles sold in the state by 2035 must be either fully electric or plug-in hybrids. A $2.6 billion investment was recently approved by the agency to encourage businesses and individuals to convert to electric vehicles.
