In a big move to mark 2024 as the "year of the AI PC," Microsoft has revealed a revolutionary addition to the standard PC keyboard — the Copilot key. This physical key, joining the ranks of familiar keys like Windows, Control, and Alt, represents an important shift in the design of the Windows PC keyboard after almost three decades.
Yusuf Mehdi, Microsoft's Executive Vice President and consumer Chief Marketing Officer, claims that the introduction of the Copilot key is a turning point moment, striving to simplify and improve users' engagement with AI transformations. The Copilot key is strategically placed, replacing the right Control key on the standard PC keyboard and perfectly blending with the Windows key, Alt key, and adjacent to the left arrow key.
The introduction of the Copilot key marks the first substantial change to the Windows PC keyboard in nearly three decades," Mehdi highlights. "We believe it will empower people to participate in the AI transformation more easily. The Copilot key joins the Windows key as a core part of the PC keyboard, and when pressed, the new key will summon the Copilot in the Windows experience to make it prime to engage Copilot in your day-to-day. For users in places where Copilot is not available, the Copilot key will serve as a shortcut to launch Windows Search, improving the overall utility of this ingenious addition. The initial keyboards highlighting the Copilot key are set to give their first appearance at this year's CES in Las Vegas, with shipments expected to begin in late February.’’
