The animated comedy, which is still airing, is one of the most well-known and critically acclaimed television shows of all time. Many of its jokes and scenes have become internet memes, and the iconic characters are well-known throughout the world, so you're probably familiar with the show. There's a joke in the season 8 episode "The Springfield Files." We see Bart's friend Millhouse loading 40 quarters into a Waterworld arcade machine in the episode, which is an X-Files crossover (the 1990s!). He takes one step as Kevin Costner's Mariner. The game ends abruptly, prompting him to insert another 40 quarters. Macaw45, an indie game developer and Twitch streamer, has created a free full game based on that 20-second joke. While the original fake game seen in the show consisted of just one screen and a few animations, Macaw45 has greatly expanded on it, adding bosses, multiple areas to explore, and even some secrets to discover. However, before you can play Kevin Costner's Waterworld, you must first load in 40 quarters. In fact, every time you die, the game demands more coins and records how much money you spend to complete it. Also, based on the audio that plays when you insert coins into the machine, you appear to be playing as Millhouse, which is the most heartbreaking aspect of the whole thing.

Macaw45 stated that he has always been "fascinated" by the fake video games that appear frequently on The Simpsons. And Waterworld's terrible arcade game stayed with Macaw45 the most. According to the developer, he kept thinking about what could possibly lie beyond that one screen we see during the show long after the episode aired. “This project was born from that interest,” said Macaw45. “And while originally planned to only be a short game, it quickly developed further and I sunk tremendous amounts of effort into it to the point where it ended up becoming a fully fleshed-out game of much greater scope than I ever expected.”
